Choosing a car seat

Introduction
Your child's weight not their age is the determining factor when choosing a car seat.  The following ages are approximate only.

Why no consider ISOFIX. The isofix systems anchor the child seat directly to the car, removing the need for seat belts. (Before purchasing an isofix car seat you must ensure this seat is compatible with any vehicles you may wish to use it in.)


Stage 0+
From birth up to 13 kg/29 lbs or from birth to 6/10 months.

The first size car seat is always rearward facing, can be used in both the front and rear seats.  (Only if no air bag is present.) This size of car seat has a carrying handle, is lightweight and portable.


Stage 1
From 9 to 18 kg/20 to 40 lbs or from approx 9 months to 4 years.

Forward facing car seat, they have adjustable seat recline for added comfort and a full harness.  Suitable from 9 kg and when your child can sit up unaided.


Stage 2
From 15 to 25 kg/33 to 55 lbs or from 4 to 6 years.

Forward facing car seat or booster seat. The booster seat lifts the child and positions the adult lap and diagonal belt correctly.


Stage 3
From 22 to 36 kg/ or from 6 to 11 years

A forward facing booster seat, lifts the child and positions the adult lap and diagonal belt correctly.


Further Information
To make things easier car seats are divided into the above stages, some car seats overlap these groups as they are designed with versatility in mind.

Several factors can affect whether the child car seat fits your car, they include the seat belt length, shape of the seats, location of anchorage points and the seat buckle position.

When choosing a car seat, important features to look out for include seat belt guides on car seat, easy to fit and easy to follow instructions, extra padding on harness straps, one pull harness and removable washable covers.

The fitting of the car seat safely is your responsibility.
