Choosing what your baby sleeps in | Introduction What to choose as your babie's first bed will take a little bit of thought; our sleeping guide will help you to decide. |
Moses Basket A moses basket provides a secure first bed for your new baby. They are lightweight and portable, easily moved from room to room. They are suitable from birth up to 3 to 4 months, or when your baby can sit up unaided. Moses baskets come complete with hood, covers and safety mattress. A stand allows the basket to be raised off the floor. Stands are available separately for £13.99 or a rocking stand for £24.99. |
Carrycot A carrycot can be used as your babies first bed, their carrying handles make them easy to transport, your baby can sleep undisturbed. A carrycot can fit on to a pram chassis or pushchair for walks. A breathable mattress is available at £11.99.

Crib Cribs are suitable from birth up to approximately 6 months or when your baby can sit up. A swinging crib has a gentle rocking motion, helping your baby to sleep. A locking device allows the crib to stand securely. A safety mattress for a crib is £11.95. |
Cot/Cot Bed A new born baby can sleep in a cot right away, but you may prefer to use a moses basket or crib for the first 4 to 6 months. You can expect a baby to be in their cot for at least 18 months depending on their size.
Cot Beds are larger with removable sides, so they can convert into a bed. These can be used for up to 6 years.
The size of the cot can vary; take into account how long you hope to use it and the size of the room. All cots and cot beds have 2 or 3 base heights. You start with the mattress base at the top and lower it as your baby grows. Cots have a drop side operated by one or both hands; this allows you to lift your baby in and out easily. Most cot beds do not have a drop side. Teething rails on the sides protects your baby's gums when teething. Most cots and cot beds have teething rails.
Other features to look out for are castors, which allow the cot/cot bed to be moved around easily. |
