Car Seat Safety: What is i-Size?
Manufacturers of car seats are continuously striving to improve car seats for babies and children, using the latest technology and research to ensure the safety and comfort of every child travelling by car. One of the latest developments in the industry is i-Size, which forms part of the new R129 EU regulation. Introduced in July 2013, i-Size is touted as ‘the future of car seats’, representing a market that is constantly adapting and improving.
What is i-Size?
i-Size is a new safety standard for car seats that forms part of the R129 regulations. Since being introduced several years ago, i-Size seats are gaining popularity fast, looking likely to replace all existing car seats at some point in the future. The creators of i-Size seats used the latest research into child safety in cars to come up with new and enhanced criteria for isofix car seats. While i-Size is a popular new option for car seats, it is important to know that i-Size will not immediately replace the current R44/04 laws – the two will simply run in conjunction with one another for the foreseeable future. This means that you do not have to immediately upgrade your current seat, although there are some additional safety benefits if you choose to do so.
The Differences Between i-Size and R44/04
There are several important safety improvements that have been brought about by the new i-Size regulations. The main changes are as follows:
- All i-Size seats utilise isofix fittings. This is the safest and easiest way to install a child safety seat, meaning more car seats will be fitted correctly.
- Currently, parents are moving to forward facing much too soon. In the event of a crash rear facing has been proven to be safer for a child.
- Added side protection. Previously, car safety seats only offered front and back protection. The addition of side protection means that children are protected from impact from all angles.
- Classification is based on height, rather than weight. This makes it easier for parents to choose their car seat, as parents tend to know the height of their child better than their weight.
Why the Change?
i-Size was introduced in order to provide higher levels of safety for children in cars. Research into the older R44/04 car seats showed that they were uncomfortable and often unsafe for children. In 2015, one of the UK’s largest in-car safety campaigners, Good Egg Safety, revealed that 76% of car seats are either fitted incorrectly or are incompatible to the child or car. From these figures, it is clear that car seat safety remains a significant problem, with many parents being unaware of how to correctly choose or fit a car seat.
