It is important to sterilise all your feeding equipment, including baby bottles and baby bottle nipples, until they are at least 12 months old. Before sterilising, you need to clean the bottles, nipples and any other equipment in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after use, ensuring you clean them thoroughly and rinse properly in the cold, running water.
How to sterilise baby bottles
Several ways to sterilise feeding equipment include cold water solution and steam sterilising. Here, we are going to focus on sterilising by boiling.
Ensure the items are safe to boil.
Boil the equipment in a large pan of water for at least 10 minutes, ensuring it all stays submerged.
Set a timer so you don’t over-boil the equipment.
If possible, leave the equipment in the pan until you need it.
Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling the newly sterilised bottles. If you can, use sterile tongs to avoid touching them.
Remember, this sterilisation method can cause baby bottle nipples to wear out faster, so check them regularly for tears or damage.
