When can I use a Bugaboo pushchair?
The exact starting age depends on the model and whether you are using the seat unit or a compatible car seat/carrycot.
This is one of the most common questions new parents ask! Here is the clear advice for using your Bugaboo pushchair seat unit:
-
Seat Unit (Pushchair Mode): Generally, a child is ready to move into the upright pushchair seat when they can sit up unaided and consistently push themselves up on their hands and knees. This usually happens around six months of age. Even then, it is best to use the seat in a reclined position until your baby has built up greater core strength.
-
From Birth: Many Bugaboo models, such as the Fox and Dragonfly, are designed as part of a travel system. This means they can be used from day one by attaching the separate Bugaboo carrycot (for a lie-flat environment) or a compatible infant car seat (using adapters) directly onto the chassis.
Always check the specific model’s instructions for its weight and age limits. If you are unsure, we recommend consulting your health visitor or paediatrician.
How to convert a Bugaboo pram into a pushchair?
The Bugaboo chassis uses a single, clever frame that you simply swap the fabrics on to change the function.
One of the great features of the Bugaboo system is that the same frame is used for both the pram (carrycot) and the pushchairs Bugaboo seat unit—you just switch the fabrics! This means you don't have a bulky second frame to store.
Here are the basic steps for models like the Fox, Donkey, and Cameleon:
-
Remove the Pram/Carrycot: Detach the carrycot from the frame by pressing the white memory buttons on the side and lifting it away.
-
Strip the Fabrics: Unzip and remove the carrycot fabric from the main metal frame and mattress. You will be left with the bare seat/pram frame.
-
Attach the Seat Fabrics: Take the Bugaboo pushchair seat unit fabric (this includes the backrest and base) and slide it over the metal frame, securing it in place with the zips and clips as directed by your manual.
-
Re-attach to Chassis: Place the newly upholstered seat unit back onto the chassis until you hear the satisfying click, which confirms it's safely locked in place.
